Barrett’s oesophagus is an abnormal (metaplastic) change in the cells of the lower end of the oesophagus. These changes can be the result of damage from chronic reflux of stomach acid into the oesophagus. The normal lining of the oesophagus is replaced with intestinal type lining. The condition is classified according to the degree of change or dysplasia i.e. low grade or high grade dysplasia .Barrett’s is often found in patients seeking medical care for heartburn. It is considered to be a pre-cancerous condition because it is associated with an increased risk of oesophageal cancer.
