Proteinuria refers to the presence of excess protein in the urine - some protein in the urine is normal. Protein can be present in small amounts (i.e. trace) or in larger amounts. Proteinuria can also be a complication of other conditions such as diabetes mellitus. The presence of protein in the urine can be an indicator of kidney disease and should always be fully investigated.
Orthostatic proteinuria is a condition whereby urine present in the urine is associated with activity and upright posture. It is a benign condition and once fully investigated, can be accepted with no extra mortality loading.
