When an individual is suffering from chest pains (angina) caused by a narrowing or blockage of the coronary arteries and drug treatment is not sufficient to relieve the symptoms, a coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) may be performed. This is a surgical procedure which bypasses the coronary obstruction by taking a vein from the leg and using this to establish a new channel for blood supply, linking up with the usual coronary arteries below the narrowing or blockage. Occasionally synthetic grafts are used. The major cause of coronary artery disease is unaffected by CABG, the procedure itself is effective for relief of symptoms, but it is not curative, so control of cardiac risk factors is vital.
