This is a rapid cardiac arrhythmia that indicates an irregular contraction of the atria due to multiple stimuli attempting to function as the pacemaker of the heart. However only an occasional atrial contraction initiates a ventricular contraction. As a result of this irregular rhythm, the ventricles cannot pump blood efficiently to the rest of the body. Symptoms include palpitations, chest discomfort, weakness, fainting and breathlessness. A flutter is similar but less rapid and chaotic. Atrial fibrillation may be either paroxysmal (intermittent) or constant. Paroxysmal atrial fibrillation is often found in those with no underlying heart disease. It can be secondary to acute alcohol intake or a heart disease, e.g. hypertension, atrial septal defect and cardiomyopathy, and is usually treated with beta blockers.
