This is an infectious disease caused by Brucella bacteria and is contracted from having direct contact with the secretions or excretions of infected animals. It can be caused by drinking unpasteurised milk of cows, goats and sheep and eating dairy products containing the Brucella organism. Person to person contact is rare. Symptoms include chills, fever, severe headaches, nausea and diarrhoea. Acute infections usually respond well to antibiotics, but with continuing exposure, the disease may enter a chronic stage with symptoms persisting for several months or years.
