Anaemia is a condition caused by lack of red blood cells or less haemoglobin than normal in each red blood cell.
Haemoglobin is a chemical in each red blood cell which binds with oxygen and takes oxygen from the lungs around the body.
Anaemia means that the body’s tissues and organs cannot get enough oxygen. Iron deficiency anaemia is the most common type. The cause of anaemia needs to be identified and treated accordingly.
It can be caused by a lack of iron in the diet or due to blood loss. It is usually treated with a short term iron supplement.
