A stroke occurs when a blood vessel carrying oxygen to the brain bursts or is blocked by a clot.
This causes interruption of blood supply to part of the brain. It can damage or destroy the brains cells which affect body functions.
Symptoms typically start suddenly but can last for more than 24 hours. A transient ischaemic attack (TIA) is also known as a mini stroke.
This happens when supply to the brain is briefly interrupted usually for a few minutes with a full recovery within 24 hours.
