Chronic obstructive lung disease includes chronic bronchitis, emphysema or both. The disease reduces the ability of the lungs to oxygenate the blood. It can be defined as the presence of cough with excessive mucus secretion by enlarged bronchial glands. This in turns causes frequent symptoms and over time results in structural damage to the bronchial tubes, causing irreversible narrowing of the airways.
Cigarette smoking is the main contributory factor to the development and progression of the disease. If smoking continues, the disease will proceed to a stage of irreversible damage.
