The retina is a thin delicate membrane which transmits light and images from the lens to the optic nerve and thus to the brain. However, the retina can occasionally separate from the rest of the eye in which case it is called a detached retina. This can be complete or partial and can be due to trauma, tumours or haemorrhages. Treatment usually involves surgical repair.
