Ectopic heart beats are small changes in a heartbeat that is otherwise normal. These changes can lead to extra or skipped heartbeats. Common causes can include infections, certain drugs, stress or stimulants such as alcohol, caffeine, tobacco. However, they can also be associated with cardiovascular disease. They are usually benign and occur frequently in the elderly. Generally treatment is not required, but if a patient is symptomatic beta blockers may be used to treat the condition.
