This is an acute, generally benign, viral infection. Symptoms include fever, malaise, sore throat, headache, swelling of lymph glands and splenomegaly may occur during the acute phase which may last two or three weeks. This is usually followed by a period of months of fatigability and lassitude during which gradual recovery occurs.
