Dementia is an umbrella term used to describe various conditions which damage brains cells and lead to a loss of brain function over time. It is a progressive condition wherein symptoms gradually worsen over time, the speed of which depends on the individual. The condition is characterised by a gradual deterioration in cognitive functioning including memory, concentration, language, problem solving, intellect and behavioural changes. There is no straightforward test for dementia or Alzheimer’s disease which can mean that confirming a diagnosis is often difficult, particularly in the early stages. An eventual diagnosis may follow a referral to a geriatrician or neurologist for a full assessment including a detailed history of the person’s medical and family history, blood tests and a brain scan. Currently there is no known cause or cure for dementia. Treatment is with drugs which are used are to manage symptoms. There are many forms of dementia, Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia are the most common types.
