Anxiety and depression are very common conditions. Anxiety is a natural emotional response to stressful situations.
While anxiety can be an everyday feeling, it can become a problem when there is no obvious reason for that anxiety or when anxious feelings persist for more than a couple of weeks. Depression is characterised by more than one episode of severe and persistent lowering of mood. It can be due to a major life event or associated with a variety of physical disorders. The symptoms can include persistent low mood, a lack of energy, social withdrawal, difficulty concentrating, insomnia, early morning wakening. Depression can be treated with drug treatment, however other forms including cognitive behavioural therapy, psychotherapy are also used. In-patient treatment can be used to treat those with a history of severe depression or suicide attempt. Manic depression or bipolar affective disorder relates to those who experience protracted periods of elevated mood interspersed with episodes of depression and periods of normality.
