Encephalitis is acute inflammation of the brain. It is commonly caused by a viral infection or bacterial infection such as bacterial meningitis. In the majority of cases, encephalitis is mild with symptoms including headache, neck stiffness, fever and drowsiness. Most cases recover fully but some lives are left with residual neurological deficits such as epilepsy or some degree of muscular weakness
