Glaucoma is a disease of the eye characterised by an abnormal increase in the pressure in the eye resulting in severe pain and blindness if left untreated. It is common in elderly people.
Cataracts are a clouding or blurring that affects the lens of the eye. It results in varying degrees of visual impairment depending on how advanced the cataract is.
Both conditions commonly occur in elderly people. You can be born with cataracts (congenital) or both conditions can be secondary to another disease, injury or trauma. Medical treatment can control but not cure glaucoma. However cataracts can be treated by surgery and this frequently restores vision.
