Goitre is the enlargement of the thyroid gland which may be due to a number of reasons. One of these reasons includes lack of dietary iodine, necessary for the production of the thyroid hormone, which results in an enlarging gland in an attempt to produce more of the hormone. The thyroid gland can be enlarged due to other causes such as thyrotoxicosis (see hyperthyroidism) or tumour.
