This is a type of acute arthritis, characterized by acute inflammation of the joints. It can begin in the knee or foot, but most commonly affects the big toe. It is caused by excessive uric acid in the blood and deposits in the joints. Medical therapy is usually successful in controlling gout. In severe cases, many joints are affected and can become deformed; also uric acid deposits in the kidneys can result in gouty nephritis and renal failure.
