A surgical procedure to remove and replace the hip joint with a prosthesis. This can occur where the joint has become grossly damaged due to arthritis or by loss of its blood supply. Prognosis is generally very good except in arthritic cases where the condition is more widespread

Facts:
At least 4500 hip replacements are carried out each year in Ireland, usually on adults aged over 65. Women are more likely to need a hip replacement than men.
