Hysterectomy is the surgical removal of the uterus or part thereof. This operation may be performed for a number of conditions, including heavy periods (menorrhagia), painful periods (dysmenorrhoea), womb displacement or benign or malignant tumours.

Facts
Cancer of the ovaries and the cervix are the most common. Approximately 3,000 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer every year, and 7,000 with cancer of the ovaries.
