An ectopic beat is a problem in the electrical system of the heart. Ectopic beats refers to a premature contraction of the upper heart chamber (atria), disturbing the normal rhythm of the heart.
Common causes can include infections, certain drugs, stress or stimulants such as alcohol, caffeine, tobacco. However, they can also be associated with cardiovascular disease. They are usually benign and occur frequently in the elderly. Generally treatment is not required, but if a patient is symptomatic beta blockers may be used to treat the condition.
