This is a varicose condition of the veins at the lower end of the rectum either above the sphincter ani muscle (internal piles) or below (external piles). They are usually a consequence of prolonged constipation or occasionally diarrhoea and the main symptom is bleeding. A haemorrhoidectomy is the surgical operation for removing haemorrhoids.
