This is a protrusion of an organ, or part of an organ, through the wall of the cavity containing it. Hernias can be congenital or acquired through strain or injury. They tend to occur at points of a structural weakness in the walls of body cavities, especially the abdomen, and are especially common in the groin region (inguinal and femoral hernias), at the navel (umbilical hernia) and at the opening in the diaphragm through which the oesophagus passes to run into the stomach (hiatus hernia).
