A coma is a profound state of unconsciousness from which a person cannot be wakened, fails to respond normally to pain or light and does not take voluntary actions. Coma may result from a variety of conditions including disease of the central nervous system, a stroke or from an injury such as a head trauma as a result of a fall or car accident.
