Haematuria is the presence of red blood cells in the urine. It can be a sign of infection, the presence of a kidney stone or a more serious disease such as a tumour in the urinary system. A symptom such as haematuria would normally warrant further investigation to establish the underlying cause. Investigations include a repeat urinalysis (urine sample), cystoscopy (examination of the bladder with a scope), IVP (intravenous pyelogram - a procedure used to visualise abnormalities in the kidneys) or renal ultrasound (a procedure using high frequency sound waves to view the urinary system and produce images of them).
