Pneumothorax is an abnormal accumulation of air in the pleural cavity which causes complete or partial collapse of the lung. Spontaneous pneumothorax occurs without any underlying lung disease or trauma to the chest. Traumatic pneumothorax results from an injury penetrating the chest wall. Secondary pneumothorax results from complications of an underlying disease such as chronic obstructive airway disease, asthma, cystic fibrosis or tuberculosis.
