Tuberculosis is a chronic recurrent infection, most common in the lungs, but can affect any organ. It is caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis. In the majority of cases, individuals will recover from infection without any evidence of disease, and the bacteria becomes inactive. TB can lie dormant for many years and reappear. Those most at risk of disease progression or reactivation of disease are those with compromised immune systems (e.g. AIDS, diabetes mellitus, kidney disease, those undergoing chemotherapy). Symptoms can include fever, fatigue, productive cough, weight loss and night sweats. TB is generally curable following treatment with antibiotics.
