Sarcoidosis is a systemic inflammatory disease of unknown cause. It is the growth of collections of inflammatory cells (granulomas) in different parts of the body. It may affect any part of the body but most commonly affects the lungs, eyes and skin. The course of the disease varies greatly among individuals and in the majority of cases; sarcoidosis is mild and the inflammation can resolve with or without treatment. In other cases it can slowly progress over time causing permanent organ damage.
