Dialysis is the process of diffusing the blood across a semi-permeable membrane to remove toxic materials and maintain correct fluid, acid base and electrolyte balance. This occurs in the case of impaired kidney function or in the absence of the kidneys i.e. the artificial replacement of the kidneys where both kidneys have ceased to function. The process is generally continued for a number of hours, a number of times per week. It is used as a temporary solution until such time as a suitable kidney can be found for a transplant.
