The sinuses are air-filled cavities in the facial bones of the skull. These cavities are lined with mucous membranes. Sinusitis is the condition in which these membranes swell and become inflamed. Most sinusitis and rhinitis are acute, self-limiting viral infections; sometimes bacterial infection develops and treatment with antibiotics is helpful.
