Meningitis is inflammation of the membranes of the brain (cerebral meningitis) or spinal cord (spinal meningitis) Meningitis usually refers to infection by bacteria or viruses. Most common symptoms include headache, neck stiffness, fever and altered consciousness. Most cases run a benign course once treated with antibiotics and prognosis is good. Only a small percentage of cases cause residual neurological damage
