Pancreatitis is inflammation of the pancreas. The pancreas, a gland situated behind the stomach, is responsible for secreting digestive enzymes and, most importantly, the production of insulin - vital in the conversion of glucose (sugar) into energy. Pancreatitis can be either acute or chronic and is characterised by inflammation and necrosis (death of body tissue) of the pancreas. Pancreatitis can often be caused by excessive alcohol consumption and continued consumption, even in moderation, can lead to disease progression and a significantly adverse prognosis
Acute pancreatitis is characterised by inflammation and necrosis of the pancreatic tissue. Gallstones and alcohol account for approximately 80% of all acute attacks. Symptoms can include abdominal pain, vomiting with fever and jaundice.
Chronic pancreatitis is characterised by recurrent acute attacks where symptoms are continuous. Scar tissue can develop with destruction of pancreatic tissue causing irreversible pancreatic damage. The most common presenting symptom is upper abdominal pain.
