The ductus arteriosus is a foetal vessel connecting the pulmonary artery with the aorta. This normally closes at birth or shortly afterwards. Occasionally it fails to close and can cause a significant reduction in the efficiency of the heart, thus putting a strain on it. It can cause pulmonary hypertension and hypertrophy (enlargement) of the atrium and ventricle. Treatment for PDA is surgical correction with good results.
