Primary pulmonary hypertension is a disease which occurs when blood pressure in the pulmonary artery or the major blood vessel connecting the right heart ventricle of the heart and the lungs is higher than normal. The condition can present as shortness of breath, dizziness or fainting, all of which are worsened on exertion. There is no apparent cause. A higher pulmonary artery blood pressure means the heart has to work harder to pump sufficient blood into the lungs. Over time, the heart muscles weaken and eventually may fail.
