The pylorus is the opening at the lower end of the stomach that leads to the duodenum. In pyloric stenosis this opening is narrowed which causes a delay in the passage of stomach contents to the duodenum. This can occur in infants or in adults, when it is usually a complication of an ulcer. Surgery is usually necessary and is curative. In a small percentage of cases, the narrowing is caused by a malignant tumour.
