A burn is an injury to the flesh caused by heat, electricity, chemicals, light, friction or radiation. Most burns affect the skin only. The most common way of classifying burns is according to depth:
Affects the outer layer of the skin only (epidermis) causing redness and pain. Generally heals within one week.
Extends to the superficial (papillary) and deep (reticular) dermis causing redness, blisters and pain. Generally heals within two - three weeks.
This is the most serious as they extends through the entire dermis and destroy the full thickness of the skin.
