Sickle cell anaemia, also known as sickle cell disease is the one of the most common inherited blood disorders affecting the haemoglobin in the blood. The disorder is characterised by red blood cells that assume an abnormal sickle shape. This sickle shape decreases the cells flexibility and results in their restricted movement through the blood vessels, depriving some tissues of oxygen. Symptoms normally consist of periodic pain and fever caused by infection or exposure to cold. Severe disease can affect the heart, kidneys, lungs and liver. Ratings depend on the exact type of disorder, frequency of attacks, the extent of any complications and the client's age.
