This is a congenital defect of the lower spinal vertebrae in which the bony canal that protects the spinal cord and nerve roots to the legs is deficient and in some cases the spinal cord is protected only by the skin. The main types of spina bifida are:
Spina bifida occulta | Minor defects present with little or no symptoms |
Spina bifida cystica | A more serious form, where developmental failure results in part of the spinal cord and nerves being exposed. This can cause damage to the nerves supplying the bladder and lower limbs, resulting in paralysis and bladder problems |
