The spleen is a large organ situated in the abdomen which is responsible for manufacturing, storing, filtering and breaking down red blood cells. It also plays an important part in the immune system. Despite all these functions, it can be removed without any ill-effects; surgical removal is known as a splenectomy. In this situation, the rating will depend on the underlying cause. Splenectomy as a result of a trauma i.e. car crash can be disregarded if a full recovery has been made.
