Attempted suicide can be the result of a serious mental disorder, alcoholism or drug abuse or due to many other physical or mental stresses. Assessment and treatment of the underlying disorder is the best treatment. Whilst some may represent an appeal for help e.g. deliberate self-harm, a cautious view has to be taken because of the risk of further self-injury.
