The thyroid gland is an endocrine gland in the neck. The sole function of the thyroid is to make thyroid hormones.
The hormones have an effect on nearly all tissues of the body where it increases cell activity. This means the sole function of the thyroid is to regulate the body’s metabolism.
There are two main types:
Hypothyroidism, also known as underactive thyroid, is an abnormality of the thyroid gland in which the gland produces less thyroid hormone levels than normal .Symptoms may include weakness, fatigue, cold intolerance, weight gain, depression, thin /brittle hair. Once diagnosed, treatment is usually straightforward, works well and symptoms usually go.
Hyperthyroidism, also known as overactive thyroid, is an abnormality of the thyroid gland in which the gland produces more thyroid hormone levels than normal. Symptoms may include weight loss, increased appetite, anxiety, restlessness, palpitations, heat intolerance, increased perspiration, general fatigue, frequent bowel movements and menstrual irregularities in women. Once diagnosed, treatment is usually effective. Long term follow up is important.
