An organ transplant is the moving of a whole or partial organ from one person (donor) to another for the purpose of replacing the recipient's damaged or failing organ with a working one from the donor site. Organs that can be transplanted include the heart, kidneys, liver, lungs, pancreas, and intestine. The greatest risk is rejection of the transplanted organ, although significant risks are also associated with effects of long term immunosuppressive therapy that must be taken on an ongoing basis to prevent rejection and also a recurrence of the disease in the transplanted organ (this can occur with renal transplants). Survival statistics for heart and lung transplants are very limited.
