Ulcerative colitis is a chronic condition which affects the large intestine causing inflammation and ulceration. Symptoms can vary in severity depending on how much of the intestine is inflamed and how severe the inflammation is. Symptoms include abdominal pain, diarrhoea and weight loss. Treatment can include drugs, including steroids and surgery to remove all or part of the bowel. Hospitalisation may be required during severe attacks.

Facts:
In 2011 there were 14.9 per 100,000 new cases of ulcerative colitis in Ireland.
Patients can be diagnosed at any age with a peak age of incidence being between 15 and 35.
