Varicose Veins are veins that have become enlarged and twisted. They may occur anywhere in the body, but are most commonly seen in the lower limbs, the rectum or anus (haemorrhoids) and the oesophagus. The saphenous vein in the thigh and calf are most frequently affected. They are dilated veins in the lower limbs caused by incompetent valves in the veins, weakness of the walls of the veins or an aterio-venous fistula.
